CANINE "K-9" UNITS |
|
The Jackson Police Department purchased a German Shepherd police dog named ULI (pronounced OOH'-lee) in early 1999. Uli and his handler, Ptl. Robert Grimes, began training in the spring of 1999, and became an operational K-9 unit in April. Since that time, the Jackson Police K-9 Unit has assisted in multiple drug arrests and criminal apprehensions, both inside the city of Jackson and in neighboring jurisdictions. Uli is trained in the detection of drugs and the tracking and apprehension of criminals. The Jackson Police Department has added a new addition to their existing K-9 force. The new K-9 was purchased by the Jackson County Major Crimes Task Force from drug seizure monies. The K-9 is a 4 year-old female German shepherd named Fritz. She, along with handler Ptl. Stephen Sprague, started training in October 2004 and became a certified duo in December 2004. Ptl Sprague and Fritz are certified in tracking, article-search, detection of narcotics, obedience, area/ building searches in addition to criminal apprehension. Ptl. Sprague and Fritz have made numerous drug arrests and criminal apprehensions. Officer Sprague and Fritz have also been instrumental in providing assistance to the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other neighboring law enforcement jurisdictions. Officer Sprague has been a member of the Jackson Police Department since October 27, 2000. |
